Oahu is home to seventy-five percent of
the Hawaiian Islands' population. Honolulu, the capital city, business,
educational and tourism center of the State, is in the urban area along
the typically sunny southern shore, which is where the majority of Oahu's
residents live. The rest of the island is rural or suburban, where the
scenic windward coast is dominated by towering green cliffs and lush
tropical foliage, and the rural north shore is dotted with world-famous
surfing beaches.
While Oahu's gay community is large and diverse, the majority of gay
bars,
nightclubs and businesses are in Honolulu's beach resort area at Waikiki,
wherein lie most of the island's tourist accommodations. Famous for its
stretch of reef-protected white sand beach and wide variety of restaurants
and shops, Waikiki is an ideal base for the visitor who wishes to
experience Hawaii's many cultural, recreational and sightseeing
opportunities, as well as having convenient access to choices in gay
nightlife. |
